A man's destiny is not written in the blood of the innocent. 1190 - County of Rouergue in France. Bernard the pilgrim, a cruel monk in the service of the pope, crisscrosses the county sowing terror in the villages he passes through. His mission: to form an army of "crusaders" in order to liberate the tomb of Christ in Jerusalem. To this end, he visits the bailiff Tancrède Delaridelle who gives him a most hostile welcome. But the monk is a devious man who does not hear anyone thwarting his plans and he decides to form a bad troop of ex-convicts to force the villagers' hand. A few places away, Adhémar de Montfort, a veteran of the crusades, lives alone in extreme poverty. Of his tormented past in the service of the king, all that remains is his immense sword hanging above the hearth of his fireplace. Eaten away by the guilt of his actions and the violence he committed in the name of God, he lives as a recluse on himself. Until the day a young peasant comes to ask him for help to save his village from the violence of the monk Bernard. At first reluctant to become a mercenary, Adhémar accepts and reforms his troop of war dogs with his former companions, all still haunted by the atrocities committed in the Holy Land. By going to save these villagers, Adhémar is offered a final chance of redemption...
